TURRIALBA COFFEE-GROWING REGION

Turrialba is an area characterized, due to abundant rain, of early ripening coffee beans. This is influenced by the Atlantic slope and Eastern Central Valley climates. Topography varies in elevation from 600 to 1,400 meters (1,969 – 4,592 feet) and it has an area of 1,642 km2 (17,675 ft2). Turrialba is situated 17 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of the volcano of the same name.

In the year 1830 the limited coffee production in Costa Rica was consumed strictly by the family that grew it or through emergent local enterprises. The first coffee plantations near cities, boosted by legislation and accessibility to the land, were fostered by the government of Braulio Carrillo (1833-1842), the first coffee-growing president of Costa Rica.

With the opening of the railway to the Atlantic, the transportation of agricultural products to the center of the country for sale, distribution and exportation became a reality. This converted coffee cultivation into an important economic activity for this relatively new production zone.
